Staff Software Engineer, Product
Customer.io
Hi, I'm Paul, VP of Engineering at Customer.io. We're looking for a staff product engineer — not a generalist who happens to touch frontend and backend, but someone who thinks like a product owner and ships like an engineer.
About Customer.io
Over 9,000 companies — from scrappy startups to global brands — use our platform to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS every day. Customer.io powers automated communication that people actually want to receive.
We help teams send smarter, more relevant messages using real-time behavioral data. Under the hood: Go, React, and AI help us ship fast and scale with confidence.
What We Value
End-to-end ownership
You take on the problems nobody's claimed — the ones that span squads with no obvious owner — and carry them from a fuzzy first conversation to what's actually live. If it touches the customer, it's yours to chase down.
Comfort in ambiguity
Half-formed problems and conflicting signals are your starting material, not a blocker. You define the problem before you solve it, form a point of view on what's worth building, and move without waiting for someone else to de-risk the call.
Customer-first, always
You think from the customer's problem backward, not the codebase forward. Every technical call traces back to what it does for the person on the other end of the message — and you can explain that connection to people who don't write code. Given the choice, you ship the thing that changes their experience, not the thing that's merely elegant.
A healthy skepticism for "the way things are done"
You retire practices that have outlived their usefulness, including ones you helped build. Best practices matter — but never more than forward motion.
Force multiplication
Shipping your part isn't the bar. You bring in the right people before a problem becomes theirs to clean up, and you leave enough behind — docs, patterns, delegation — that the team keeps moving without you in the room.
What You'll Do
- Own important, ambiguous problems from initial framing through launch and iteration. Set direction, align partners, and stay accountable for the result.
- Partner with product, design, and data to shape priorities, scope the work, and define how success will be measured.
- Lead technical decisions across the stack, including architecture, performance, reliability, and maintainability.
- Lead work across teams and systems. Build alignment, resolve technical disagreements, and keep complex initiatives moving.
- Improve engineering practices through mentorship, reusable patterns, and clear technical guidance.
- Use AI throughout your engineering work, with sound judgment about where it helps, where it falls short, and how its output should be reviewed. Help the team improve by testing new workflows, sharing what works, and identifying useful opportunities for automation.
- Participate in an on-call rotation as required, supporting the systems the team builds.
What we're looking for
- A track record of leading complex work across teams or systems and delivering meaningful customer, business, or engineering outcomes.
- Strong backend engineering experience, with the ability to work across the stack and lead end-to-end technical decisions.
- Strong product and technical judgment, especially when the problem or path forward is unclear.
- The ability to influence experienced peers and align teams without formal authority.
- Experience using metrics, experimentation, and observability to guide decisions and improve production systems.
- Regular, hands-on use of AI across the software development lifecycle, with the judgment to adapt as tools change while remaining accountable for quality, security, and outcomes. Experience improving how a broader team uses AI is a strong plus.
Compensation & Benefits
We believe in transparency. Starting salary for this role is $200,000 - $280,000 USD (or equivalent in local currency) depending on experience and subject to market rate adjustment. This role also carries a 10% annual bonus target.
We know our people are what make us great, and we're committed to taking great care of them. Our inclusive benefits package supports your well-being and growth, including 100% coverage of medical, dental, vision, mental health, and supplemental insurance premiums for you and your family. We also offer 16 weeks paid parental leave, unlimited PTO, stipends for remote work and wellness, a professional development budget, and more.

Our Process
No gotchas, no trick questions - just a clear, human process designed to help both of us make an informed decision.
- Application - We review everyone with care. Tell us why you're interested.
- Recruiter Call (30 mins) - Let's chat about what you're looking for and how we work.
- Hiring Manager Interview (60 mins) - Talk with one of our hiring managers about your working style and a product you've owned end-to-end, plus a short AI-assisted coding exercise.
- System Design Interview (60 mins) - A collaborative conversation that moves between product tradeoffs and system design — how you'd scope something ambiguous and how you'd build it.
- Take-Home Assignment - Complete a short, realistic task similar to what you'd work on here.
- Assignment Review Call (60 mins) - Walk us through your work and discuss tradeoffs, priorities, and how you'd iterate.
All final candidates will be asked to complete a background check and employment verifications as part of our pre-employment process.
Customer.io recognizes the stifling impact of systemic injustice on diverse communities. We commit to using our influence to increase inclusion and equity within the tech industry. We strive to build an inclusive team culture, implement bias-free hiring practices, and develop community partnerships to expand our global impact.
Zoom is the only video conference platform that we use, virtual interviews will be conducted using the video capability (i.e., not via the chat), and offers will be extended in writing on official Customer.io letterhead. Please be vigilant in all of your job search activity, and if you have any questions please contact .

We believe in empathy, transparency, responsibility, and, yes, a little awkwardness. If you're excited by what you read and want to build software that makes communication better for everyone—apply now.

Indigo Engineering
Indigo is hiring a Senior Product Engineer to accelerate our work building organizing tools for progressive campaigns and organizations.
OUR MISSION
We believe that progressive campaigns focused on building sustained, authentic relationships with voters – rooted in voters’ material needs – are the key to systemic change in our country. In this moment of democratic backsliding and rising inequality, it’s particularly urgent that we deliver that kind of change.
To that end, we're building software and data products to help Democratic campaigns and progressive organizations run voter outreach programs that are genuinely responsive to people's needs and rooted in local communities.
WHAT IS INDIGO?
We build software and data products for Democratic campaigns and progressive advocacy organizations. We're a small team with a culture of autonomy, consistently challenging and varied work, and concrete opportunities for major impact. At the same time, our company has built partnerships with major organizations, allowing us to avoid the financial anxiety and growing pains that many similarly-sized startups face. It's a pretty great situation!
OUR PRINCIPLES
We have an opinion. Our products are strictly for Democratic campaigns and progressive organizations, and they're designed to help those users run substantively better programs and win more elections.
We believe in mutual respect. We've been lucky to build a team that consistently demonstrates kindness, humility, and integrity – toward each other and our users. Maintaining that culture is critical to delivering on our goals.
We value diversity. We'll need to collectively bring a range of lived experiences and backgrounds to meet the needs of the candidates and advocacy organizations we intend to serve.
We run a disciplined and focused operation. We aim to establish a business that's financially sustainable and whose products and roadmap are fully aligned with our mission.
We believe in the power of a small but mighty team. A group of passionate, independent, multi-talented builders can have more impact than much larger teams.
HOW WE BUILD
We're a human-driven, agents-forward engineering team. While everything we build is rooted in human-centered planning, design, architecture, and decision-making, coding agents have become an increasingly important part of our daily workflow. That said, we're very deliberate about how we use them. Agents have helped us to accelerate our work, but it’s also a major body of work to build appropriate skills, harnesses, and review systems to ensure the agents are doing what we want them to do, and doing it well.
THE ROLE
The person in this role will:
- Turn ambiguous feature ideas into clear, well-scoped technical plans that both humans and agents can execute against
- Make key architecture and design decisions
- Work with a high level of autonomy and take ownership of major components of the product and code base
- Ship lots of code
- Collaborate with other engineers to build and maintain the scaffolding that makes agents effective in our codebase: context docs, skills, test harnesses, best practices, workflows, CI guardrails, and other tooling
- Review code with rigor and a strong sense for which changes or decisions merit careful human attention and which can be safely delegated to agentic review
- Help triage customer feedback and issues
- Leverage large language models to boost the pace and quality of their work: faster development, more thorough code review, more comprehensive specs and mocks, etc.
Our product engineering team is responsible for developing and maintaining our web application (Matchbook) and its accompanying external API, as well as part of our data pipeline. Our stack includes React, GraphQL, Django, Postgres, dbt, BigQuery, and Google Cloud.
We don’t require familiarity with our specific stack, but you should have experience using a comparable modern web development stack in a production environment.
WHAT TO EXPECT
If you join our team, you'll be coding on day one, shipping code in week one, and directly contributing to the success of the progressive movement in this election cycle and beyond.
REMOTE ENVIRONMENT
Indigo is a remote organization with team members distributed around the United States. We'll hire the best people from anywhere in the country and support a remote working environment that's flexible, transparent, and trusting.
COMPENSATION
The salary for this role will be $170,000-$215,000 per year.
BENEFITS
- Indigo covers 100% of health, dental, and vision coverage for employees and 80% for dependents
- Employer-provided long-term disability and life insurance
- 21 days of paid time off plus federal holidays
- Unlimited sick leave
- 16 weeks paid parental leave for parents of any gender, including adoptive parents
- 401(K) match with immediate vesting
ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS
We're generally looking for candidates with:
- Demonstrated interest in and passion for progressive politics: we’re all here because we care deeply about our country and we believe that our work will play a critical role in the fight to defend democracy.
- At least several years of experience as an engineer building a live product
- Comfort working across a typical web stack, including the front end, back end / API, database, and infrastructure
- Meaningful experience successfully leveraging coding agents and harnesses (Claude Code, Codex, or similar) to strengthen and accelerate projects that have been deployed to customers at scale
- A track record of designing clear technical plans and specs, and of decomposing large projects into work that can be delegated and verified
- Excellent oral and written communication skills. In that vein, please write your cover letter in your own words (using an LLM for light copy editing is fine).
- High emotional intelligence and empathy: the mutual respect and honesty underlying our relationships is our team’s greatest asset.
- Some experience and comfort stepping a bit outside of your engineering role. We’re a small team with no formal product manager, designer, or UX researcher, and we expect our engineers to exercise end-to-end ownership and think through (and have an opinion on) the user-facing implications of every engineering decision.
- Strong code review instincts: you can spot subtle bugs, weak abstractions, and quiet scope creep in code you didn't write.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, startup-like environment: we work reasonable hours and maintain a healthy work/life balance, but our development process moves quickly and our team members often wear multiple hats.

Senior | Staff Product Engineer
Convene
Convene Hospitality Group (CHG) operates a global portfolio of lifestyle brands focused on creating places and experiences that bring people together. The company designs, develops, and operates hospitality-driven destinations to host gatherings of all kinds, ranging from small corporate meetings to immersive brand activations and beyond. We love bringing people together in person, and that passion for great experiences extends to our employees as well. If you're interested in creating inspiring moments of connection, consider joining our team.
Senior | Staff Product Engineer
Convene Hospitality Group (CHG) is hiring Senior and Staff Product Engineers to join our Technology team. In these hands-on, full-stack roles, you’ll work across our brand portfolio to design, build, and modernize our tech stack—from client-facing digital experiences to the internal operating system that runs our business.
We have openings at both levels and will align the title and scope to your experience.
You'll join a small, sharp team that solves real business problems with whatever works best, whether that's AI, custom code, or intelligently integrated enterprise systems. You'll write code, design solutions, and contribute to the culture we’re building at CHG.
Though early in adopting AI-driven development, we’re building an AI-first engineering team and want engineers who will help us get there. Day to day, that means paying attention to how we work, spotting technical gaps, and helping us iterate our way into the future. You'll help shape the tech and practices that we carry forward.
What You’ll Do:
- Build end to end. Own features across the front end, back end, APIs, business logic, and data layer. You'll take them from ideation to production and beyond: measuring, learning, and continuously improving.
- Connect the dots. A lot of the pieces are already there. Design how our systems fit together across brands, apps, and enterprise tools like Salesforce and NetSuite. Build the integrations that keep them talking, and handle client, employee, and financial data with security, privacy, and compliance in mind.
- Turn problems into plans. Break ambiguous requirements into clear technical plans and reviewable units of work for humans and agents.
- Work AI-native. Use AI agents across research, prototyping, implementation, testing, refactoring, and documentation, and verify what they produce.
- Shape the foundation. Contribute to architecture, technology choices, and development patterns built to scale with the business.
- Help set the standard. Introduce and refine AI development practices, tools, and workflows, and help teammates adopt them.
- Wilderness coding. Leave it better than you found it. Make the codebase easier to work in, for people and agents alike. That means tests, monitoring, documentation, and architecture patterns that scale with the business.
- Collaborate. Partner with product, design partners, and engineering to clarify requirements and explain trade-offs. Participate in code review, pairing, onboarding, and mentorship.
What We Look For:
- You have 6+ years of experience engineering production software for Senior level, or 9+ years with cross-system architecture ownership for Staff level.
- You're solid on relational data, including SQL, schema design, transactions, and migrations, and comfortable with modern data platforms: warehouses, pipelines, and getting the right data to the right place.
- You build with quality and security in mind. That includes testing, accessibility, input validation, authentication and authorization, and common web security risks.
- You use AI agents for real multi-step work, not just autocomplete. You write clear specs, scope tasks well, give agents the right context, and check what they produce against the real system. Maybe you’ve even said out loud, “I hardly even touch the actual code anymore.”
- You think like a product engineer. You start with the problem, not the solution, ask "why" before "how," and get creative about solving it.
- You make thoughtful technical judgments that hold up over time, even while treading in murky waters. You have a bias toward simple, maintainable solutions. KISS or bust.
- You like thinking out loud. You bring ideas to technical planning, welcome pushback on yours, and give honest, kind feedback in return.
- You explain decisions, risks, and trade-offs clearly to engineers and non-engineers. You make teammates better through code review, pairing, and mentoring.
- You've led technical work beyond your own tickets: scoping projects, guiding other engineers, and working with external partners or contractors to keep delivery on track and quality high. At the Staff level, you've owned architecture across multiple systems.
- You’re curious. You keep up with fast-changing tools and practices, evaluate them on evidence, and know what to bring in and what to admire from afar, based on what we can sustain long-term.
Bonus Points:
- You've shipped an LLM-backed feature to production and trudged through the task of programmatically determining whether it's doing its job.
- You've extended an AI development environment with MCP servers, repository instructions, reusable skills, custom workflows, or automated code review.
- You've worked with business systems like Salesforce, NetSuite, or HRIS platforms.
- You've built event-driven systems or reverse ETL pipelines.
- You've worked with AWS or a similar cloud platform, and with infrastructure as code.
- You've established new systems, standards, or engineering practices from an early stage.
- You've worked in hospitality, events, real estate, or another customer-centric, multi-location business.
