Staff Software Engineer : Growth Engineering
About the Role
Growth Engineering is the team responsible for building and maintaining the reliable, configurable systems that power scalable client launches and secure member access to Modern Health, one that gives customers programmatic and self-service control over eligibility, identity, and feature packaging while ensuring members can quickly and reliably reach the care they're entitled to. This includes owning the engineering behind eligibility processing, identity and access, the client configuration platform, and support of our reporting platform. Collectively, this is the engineering core of how Modern Health onboards, authenticates, and scales technical access for every client and member globally.
We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer who can operate with high ownership across the full stack: someone we can trust to work cross-functionally with product and design, translate ambiguous problems into clear technical plans (tech specs/RFCs), and then execute against that plan, both individually and in close collaboration with other engineers. You'll be expected to have (or quickly build) deep familiarity with our tech stack and product domain so you can move fast without First-derivative learning curves slowing down the team. We expect an engineer at this level to be ramped up and owning critical parts of roadmap development within 30 days of onboarding.
This position is not eligible to be performed in Hawaii.
What You'll Do:
- Truly full stack product development with a slight lean towards the backend
- Build and maintain GraphQL APIs powered by Python services (Django, Flask)

- Engineer efficient and reusable systems that drive complex web and mobile applications
- Maintain HIPAA and GDPR compliance and general security through best practice implementation
- Independently write and execute technical plans (tech specs/RFCs) for large, ambiguous, cross-domain projects, negotiating scope with product along the way
- Lead ambiguous or large projects, working collaboratively with design, product, cross-functional partners, and other engineers to deliver a cohesive adaptive care experience
- Serve as the directly responsible individual from engineering on roadmap commitments, owning launch timelines, decomposing work, and coordinating dependencies across teams
- Write and maintain technical documentation, unit tests, and integration tests
- Be a thought leader in strategic engineering and tech initiatives, and contribute to cross-team engineering forums
- Lead and contribute to cross-team engineering forums and on cross-team engineering projects
- Mentor other engineers to scale your impact both on Care Journey and across the engineering department
- Provide compassionate and impactful reviews of technical project plans and code
- Participate in on-call, driving investigation, remediation, and process improvements from recurring issues
- Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position. Applicants must be able to maintain work authorization for the duration of employment without employer sponsorship or employer-provided training plans or attestations (including, for example, the Form I-983 required for STEM OPT).
Our Stack:
- Python, Django, Flask, FASTApi, aiohttp
- GraphQL, REST
- React, React Native, Typescript, Redux, Vite

- Demonstrated high ownership: you independently decompose very ambiguous problems into component parts, propose technically elegant strategies, and can estimate and deliver against them with confidence
- A track record of writing technical plans (tech specs/RFCs) that hold up under cross-functional scrutiny, and driving solutioning for initiatives that span multiple domains or teams
- Experience building and maintaining GraphQL and/or REST APIs
- Experience scaling relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and writing performant queries
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally and be trusted as a technical partner by product, design, and other engineering teams, including navigating disagreement and bringing people along on a technical direction
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable driving alignment with stakeholders outside your immediate team
- Experience mentoring and effectively working with a distributed development team
- Experience leading and architecting large-scale projects as a technical thought leader
- Passion for building something to improve the lives of others.
- Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position. Applicants must be able to maintain work authorization for the duration of employment without employer sponsorship or employer-provided training plans or attestations (including, for example, the Form I-983 required for STEM OPT).
Bonus points if you have experience in:
- Authorization protocols such as SSO SAML, OIDC, JWT.
- AI/LLM-powered product features (e.g., recommendation systems, conversational or agentic experiences)
- Experience with maturely leveraging AI in your development lifecycle to improve quality and speed for yourself and other engineers

Lead Software Engineer - NBA
Humana
Become a part of our caring community
The Lead Full Stack Engineer owns the NBA platform's orchestration and state machine — the system that carries a decision from the moment it is made to the moment it is activated, delivered, and acknowledged across member engagement channels. Built in Node.js/TypeScript on the Temporal workflow platform, the solution manages durable workflow execution, long-running member journeys, and reliable action delivery through Transactional Outbox and Kafka-based event patterns. This role owns the critical path between decision generation, activation, delivery, and receipt processing, ensuring actions are executed correctly, consistently, and at enterprise scale. This is a hands-on technical leadership role: you write code, lead a small team of engineers and contractors, and are accountable end-to-end for the durability, correctness, observability, and timeliness of action delivery across the member journey.Key Responsibilities
- Pod delivery — Own end-to-end delivery for the orchestration pod: planning, execution, quality, and shipping on time.
- Workflow orchestration — Design and build durable, long-running workflows on Temporal in Node.js/TypeScript that model the member action lifecycle, state transitions, scheduling, activation, and delivery outcomes.
- Action delivery architecture — Own the end-to-end action delivery pipeline from decision publication through activation, delivery acknowledgment, and state reconciliation. Design and implement Transactional Outbox patterns, atomic persist-and-publish workflows, idempotency controls, retry/backoff mechanisms, dead-letter queue handling, and delivery receipt processing.
- Activation integrations — Own the components that activate decisions to Adobe Experience Platform (AEP) and publish through Kafka output patterns to downstream channels. Define delivery contracts, activation guarantees, and receipt ingestion patterns that ensure reliable action execution.
- Hands-on development — Contribute code alongside the team, including Temporal workflows and activities, Node.js services, Kafka producers and consumers, outbox processors, and integration services.
- Technical decisions — Make the day-to-day architecture decisions for the pod, including workflow design, state machine modeling, retry and compensation strategies, idempotency, topic strategy, schema evolution, delivery guarantees, and API contracts.
- Distributed systems reliability — Engineer for correctness in a highly asynchronous environment. Ensure exactly-once business intent through idempotent consumers, deduplication strategies, durable state management, safe retries, and graceful failure handling.
- Observability and operations — Establish monitoring, tracing, alerting, and operational visibility across workflow execution, event publication, activation processing, and delivery acknowledgment pipelines.
- Team leadership — Manage and mentor engineers and contractors; run code reviews, uphold engineering standards, and keep the team unblocked and moving.
- Cross-team coordination — Coordinate interfaces with decisioning, the Action Library, activation systems, and the platform team; surface dependencies, integration risks, and operational concerns early.
Use your skills to make an impact

- Hands-on experience with workflow orchestration platforms, with Temporal strongly preferred (or comparable technologies such as Cadence, Step Functions, or Airflow for durable workflows).
- Strong distributed systems fundamentals, including event-driven architectures, asynchronous processing, retries, idempotency, and failure recovery.
- Experience designing and implementing Kafka producer and consumer patterns in production environments.
- Experience building reliable event delivery systems using Transactional Outbox, event-driven integration patterns, or comparable messaging architectures.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a small pod through delivery and be accountable for technical outcomes.
- Experience operating cloud-native systems on Azure or equivalent cloud infrastructure using Kubernetes, containers, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Clear communicator who can represent the pod's architecture, delivery status, operational risks, and tradeoffs to technical and business stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Production experience with Temporal at scale, including workflow versioning, long-running workflow management, and operational lifecycle management.
- Deep experience implementing Transactional Outbox patterns, delivery acknowledgment workflows, dead-letter queue management, receipt reconciliation, and exactly-once processing semantics.
