Who we are

Samsara (NYSE: IOT) is the pioneer of the Connected Operations™ Cloud, which is a platform that enables organizations that depend on physical operations to harness Internet of Things (IoT) data to develop actionable insights and improve their operations. At Samsara, we are helping improve the safety, efficiency and sustainability of the physical operations that power our global economy. Representing more than 40% of global GDP, these industries are the infrastructure of our planet, including agriculture, construction, field services, transportation, and manufacturing — and we are excited to help digitally transform their operations at scale.

Working at Samsara means you’ll help define the future of physical operations and be on a team that’s shaping an exciting array of product solutions, including Video-Based Safety, Vehicle Telematics, Apps and Driver Workflows, and Equipment Monitoring. As part of a recently public company, you’ll have the autonomy and support to make an impact as we build for the long term.

About the role

The way software gets built is changing fast. AI agents are starting to write, review, and ship code alongside engineers — and our Developer Experience team sits right in the middle of figuring out what that actually looks like at Samsara.

We build the tooling and infrastructure that Samsara's engineers use every day. Our "customers" are the people building the products that keep millions of workers safe and physical operations running. When we make their day better, every product team at Samsara benefits.

We're hiring a Staff Software Engineer to help set technical direction for the team. You'd be working on everything from our CI/CD pipelines to the AI coding agents engineers will rely on to do their jobs. It's a small team with a lot of surface area, and the work you do here shows up across the whole engineering org.

This role is remote and open to candidates based in the US.

You might be a good fit if:

  • You've actually built things with AI coding agents — not just used them. You have opinions about what works, what doesn't, and where this is all heading.
  • You like work where a small change you make ripples out to help a lot of people.
  • You care about what Samsara does. The software we build helps keep grocery shelves stocked, lights on, and workers safe on the job.
  • You're genuinely curious and like learning new things. The tech landscape here moves quickly and we're all figuring it out together.
  • You think of engineers as real people, not tickets. You're happy to sit with them, watch how they work, and dig into the small frustrations that add up.
  • You work well with others. We move faster when we move together.

In this role, you'll:

  • Help shape the technical direction of our developer platform — CI/CD, build systems, and the AI agents engineers interact with daily
  • Design and build AI agents that take real work off engineers' plates: coding, code review, test generation, release automation, and incident response
  • Scale our tooling so it can keep up as the engineering org grows, without sacrificing reliability or developer happiness
  • Standardize tools and practices so good ideas spread instead of getting reinvented on every team
  • Raise the technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship
  • Partner with engineering leadership on the bets worth making, and be honest about tradeoffs
  • Represent Samsara externally when it makes sense — talks, open source, helping us become a place great engineers want to work
  • Live out our cultural principles: Focus on Customer Success, Build for the Long Term, Adopt a Growth Mindset, Be Inclusive, and Win as a Team

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8+ years building software, with at least 2 years in an architect or technical leadership role
  • Strong programming and design fundamentals
  • 4+ years working on large-scale distributed systems
  • 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams

Nice to have:

  • Experience building developer platforms, internal tooling, or CI/CD for a large engineering org (hundreds of engineers or more)
  • You've shipped real work with AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, custom agents) — not just tried them out
  • Strong skills in Go, Python, TypeScript, or a similar language
  • A track record of making engineers measurably faster — quicker builds, easier deploys, less toil, happier developers
  • Comfort working in ambiguity and getting teams aligned without needing formal authority

The range of annual base salary for full-time employees for this position is below. Please note that base pay offered may vary depending on factors including your city of residence, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This role is also eligible for an initial RSU grant with no vesting cliff, and ongoing refresh opportunities tied to performance, subject to plan terms and conditions. Learn more about our total rewards and benefits below.

Annual Base Salary
$154,800—$212,850 CAD

Total Rewards

At Samsara, we build for the people who keep the global economy moving. We want owners, not passengers, which is why our rewards are designed to fuel high-impact builders. Our compensation program delivers above-market total compensation through a combination of base salary, performance-based bonus/variable pay, and equity (for eligible roles) in a high-growth public company. We meaningfully differentiate pay for our top performers, who have the opportunity to earn above-market compensation that can outpace the broader market over time.

Beyond compensation, we provide the foundations that enable long-term success: a flexible, employee-led remote model, a professional development stipend, comprehensive health and parental leave plans, and more. If you’re ready to build for the long term and own the outcome, your journey starts here.

Flexible Working

At Samsara, we embrace a flexible working model that caters to the diverse needs of our teams. Our offices are open for those who prefer to work in-person and we also support remote work where it aligns with our operational requirements. For certain positions, being close to one of our offices or within a specific geographic area is important to facilitate collaboration, access to resources, or alignment with our service regions. In these cases, the job description will clearly indicate any working location requirements. Our goal is to ensure that all members of our team can contribute effectively, whether they are working on-site, in a hybrid model, or fully remotely. All offers of employment are contingent upon an individual’s ability to secure and maintain the legal right to work at the company and in the specified work location, if applicable.

At Samsara, we welcome everyone regardless of their background. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, protected veteran status, disability, age, and other characteristics protected by law. We depend on the unique approaches of our team members to help us solve complex problems and want to ensure that Samsara is a place where people from all backgrounds can make an impact.

Bready* to make a change?

Toast creates technology to help restaurants and local businesses succeed in a digital world, helping business owners operate, increase sales, engage customers, and keep employees happy. Because our technology is purpose-built for restaurants, by restaurant people - and increasingly shaped by AI in both what we build and how we build - restaurants can trust that we'll deliver on their needs for today while investing in the experiences that will power their restaurant of the future.

Developer Experience sits and builds the tools, platforms, and workflows that hundreds of Toast engineers rely on every day. We maintain and grow local development tools that accelerate engineers in the inner-loop of development, increasingly leveraging AI to enhance these workflows. You'll build and improve the tooling they use every day, measure where time is lost, and ship changes that empower Developers across Toast to ship faster and with more confidence. More and more of this work involves AI-assisted development, so you'll help shape how Toast engineers build software in the years ahead.

About this roll* (Responsibilities)

  • Maintain and grow local development tools that accelerate engineers in the inner-loop of development.
  • Contribute to key internal development platform components like service templates and the developer portal.
  • Find and fix bottlenecks in the developer workflow, such as slow local builds, flaky tests, and painful setup steps, and use data to measure the impact of your changes.
  • Maintain and expand testing frameworks and core libraries used for developing web services.
  • Help integrate and roll out AI-assisted development tools, and help engineers across Toast adopt them effectively.
  • Partner directly with product engineering teams to understand their pain points, gather feedback, and turn it into improvements to the platform.
  • Operate the services you own in production, including monitoring, on-call participation, and incident follow-up.
  • Write clear documentation and take part in design and code reviews with teammates.

Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements)

  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience building and shipping production software.
  • Proficiency in at least one general-purpose language (e.g. Kotlin, Java, Go, or TypeScript).
  • Experience building and maintaining core libraries and developer tooling.
  • Working knowledge of containers and cloud infrastructure (e.g. Docker, AWS).
  • Solid grounding in testing practices and in writing maintainable, well-tested code.
  • Comfort jumping into unfamiliar codebases and debugging problems across the stack.
  • Strong empathy for your users (fellow engineers) and the ability to explain technical tradeoffs clearly.

What will help you stand out:

  • Experience with the Backstage Developer Portal.
  • Familiarity with AI-augmented development workflows and tools (e.g. Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or similar).
  • Experience managing 3rd party tools like LaunchDarkly, Wiremock Cloud, or Postman
  • Contributions to internal or open-source developer tools, CLIs, or IDE plugins.
  • Experience instrumenting developer metrics (e.g. DORA, build/test analytics) or observability tools like Datadog.
