About The Role
We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Cloud Infrastructure who can take ownership of the reliability, automation, and evolution of our core systems. You’ll work across the stack, with a strong emphasis on backend, infrastructure, and system-level engineering, to strengthen the foundations that everything else runs on. This role is for someone who enjoys digging into complex systems, building the tooling and automation that keep them running smoothly, and stepping in anywhere (including the frontend) when something needs fixing.
What You’ll Do
- Design, implement, and maintain core systems and services that support our platform’s reliability, performance, and scalability.
- Build automation and tooling that reduce operational overhead, improve developer workflows, and enforce system-level consistency.
- Develop integrations between our systems and external platforms (e.g., billing, CRM, authentication, analytics).
- Improve observability, monitoring, and alerting across services to ensure strong operational visibility.
- Architect and maintain infrastructure components (e.g., distributed services, data pipelines, deployment automation).
- Contribute to security-focused systems work, such as permissions controls, access flows, and auditability.
- Troubleshoot issues across services and layers, backend, infrastructure, and occasionally frontend, taking full ownership from diagnosis to resolution.
- Jump into frontend code as needed to close the loop on system-level changes or fix issues that block broader system reliability.
What You’ll Need
- B.S. in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Strong professional experience in systems, platform, or infrastructure engineering.
- Proficiency in Rust with a solid understanding of systems-level programming.
- Solid experience with databases (transactional & analytical) including schema design, performance tuning, migrations, and operational reliability.
- Strong understanding of API design, data flows, and service integrations.
- Hands-on experience with distributed systems or service-oriented architectures.
- Comfort working with infrastructure-as-code and containerized deployments.
- Ability to work autonomously and make high-leverage technical decisions in a fast-moving environment.
- A bias toward automation and building tools that remove friction.
Nice to Have
- Experience with frontend development (JavaScript/React) for occasional UI-level fixes.
- Background with billing systems (Stripe) or CRM platforms.
- Experience building internal tooling, permissions systems, or developer productivity infrastructure.
- Familiarity with CAD-adjacent workflows or domain-specific data pipelines.
The salary range for this role is provided below. The final offer will depend on multiple factors including candidate experience, skills, expertise, and market data. Compensation may vary by geography.

Staff Software Engineer

Requirements
- Strong backend engineering — you write production code daily in at least two of: Go, Python, Node.js/TypeScript. Go being the preferred language for the runtime services
- Experience building backend services from scratch at a startup: APIs, job scheduling, state management, distributed systems
- Solid understanding of real-time systems where latency matters: websocket connections, condition-based evaluation, sub-second response requirements
- Production experience with Postgres, Redis, and at least one analytics DB (ClickHouse, TimescaleDB, BigQuery)
- Kubernetes experience — deploying, scaling, and debugging production workloads on AWS EKS
- You’ve owned a system end-to-end: designed it, built it, deployed it, operated it, fixed it at 3am
- Experience with model serving / LLM infrastructure — deploying, scaling, and optimizing inference (vLLM, TGI, TensorRT-LLM, or managed endpoints)
- Background in trading systems, exchange APIs, or fintech where uptime has direct financial consequences
- Experience with onchain infrastructure: wallet operations, RPC nodes, transaction monitoring, DEX integration
- Familiarity with MCP (Model Context Protocol) or similar agent-to-tool connectivity patterns
- Experience building multi-agent platforms — orchestrating many independent processes sharing infrastructure but operating autonomously
- Experience with CI/CD for systems where “deploy” means updating live trading agents, not just web servers

As a Senior Software Engineer on the Exchange team within the Institutional product group, you'll build and operate the real-time trading systems that power Coinbase's institutional exchange - matching engines, order management, market data, and funding rate computation. This team owns the core infrastructure that clears billions of dollars in daily volume for the world's largest financial institutions. You'll write performance-critical code, own system reliability end to end, and ship features that directly expand Coinbase's trading capabilities.
What you'll do:
- Build and operate low-latency, event-sourced trading systems spanning matching, order entry, risk, and market data across cloud and colocated environments.
- Own the reliability and correctness of production systems processing high-throughput financial data 24/7, including incident response and failover design.
- Partner with Product, Infrastructure, and senior engineering leadership to translate strategy into quarterly deliverables and well-scoped milestones.
- Drive technical design decisions within your domain, producing clear proposals and building consensus with peers and tech leads.

- Track record designing and operating highly reliable distributed systems processing high volumes with strict correctness and uptime requirements (24/7).
- Experience partnering with Product and cross-functional teams to scope and deliver complex technical projects on clear timelines.
- Genuine interest in crypto and institutional markets, with the ability to ramp quickly; deep crypto experience is a plus, not a requirement.
- Utilizes generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
