Sr Software Engineer, Applications
Basis
WHO WE ARE
ABOUT THE TEAM
The Auth team owns the systems that decide who can do what across Basis: authentication, identity, and fine-grained authorization for a platform built on complex agency and org hierarchies. We're an enabling team: every product team at Basis depends on the primitives, policies, and infrastructure we build and own. That now includes authorization for AI agents operating alongside human users, not just human users alone.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Extend our identity layer in Auth0: authentication flows, token issuance, identity federation.
- Build and maintain our ReBAC authorization model in OpenFGA, the system every authorization decision on the platform runs through.
- Own the details of OAuth 2.0 and OIDC in our stack: token flows, JWKS validation, scopes, audience restrictions.
- Define how AI agents authenticate and receive scoped permissions, so non-human actors operate under the same authorization model as people.
- Drive technical projects that cut across multiple teams and systems, from design through production.
- Set technical direction and quality standards for the team and review the work that ships against them.
- Support and mentor other engineers through code review, design discussions, and day-to-day collaboration.
WHAT YOU BRING TO THE TABLE
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
- Deep, hands-on knowledge of OAuth 2.0 and OpenID.
- Experience with ReBAC systems (OpenFGA, Zanzibar, SpiceDB): modeling schemas, writing and testing tuple-based policies, and reasoning about permission evaluation performance.
- Experience with Auth0 or a comparable identity provider (Okta, Azure AD, Keycloak).
- Strong backend skills in Java, Ruby, or Python, with frameworks such as Spring Boot, Rails, or Django.
- Regular use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex) for code generation, debugging, and exploring unfamiliar code, and the judgment to own and vet what they produce.
- A collaborative approach to design and decision-making, and a commitment to building an inclusive team.
BONUS POINTS
- Experience building or scaling auth systems for a platform with complex organizational hierarchies (agencies, multi-tenant SaaS, etc.).
- Familiarity with policy-as-code or attribute-based access control (ABAC).
- Background in ad tech or programmatic advertising.
- Contributions to open-source identity or authorization projects.
OUR TECH STACK
- Languages: Ruby, JavaScript, Java
- Auth & Identity: Auth0, OpenFGA
- Infrastructure: AWS, Docker, Kubernetes
- Data: PostgreSQL, Redis
- Frameworks & Tools: Spring Boot, Rails, Node.js, React, RabbitMQ, Sidekiq

Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with a strong backend background, comfortable in a product-driven environment with changing priorities and a high level of ownership. This is a backend-first role (~70%) with occasional frontend tasks (~30%) when features require touching UI or integrating SDKs. Success means owning the technical side end-to-end: shaping technical solutions under uncertainty, taking responsibility for system behavior in production, and contributing to long-term platform evolution alongside Product Managers, the Engineering Manager, and other senior engineers.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement backend-heavy features using TypeScript and Node.js; build and evolve REST APIs with focus on correctness, consistency, and clear boundaries between services
- Work with SQL (PostgreSQL): data modeling, migrations, and consistency guarantees
- Take full ownership of one or more services, from requirements and implementation to production support, and drive integration work with external partners (vendors, clients) when needed
- Own production behavior: investigate incidents, debug API failures, analyze data issues, and apply reliability patterns (timeouts, retries, idempotency, graceful degradation)
- Improve observability (logs, metrics, visibility into system behavior) and propose improvements where reliability, performance, or monitoring is weak
- Participate in tech spikes: explore unclear problems and turn them into concrete technical plans
- Collaborate with Product and EM to clarify requirements and reduce ambiguity early; contribute to technical discussions, raise risks, and explain trade-offs
- Review code, mentor mid-level engineers, and contribute to React code when features require UI updates or customer-facing flows
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of professional software development experience
- Strong backend expertise with TypeScript and Node.js
- Real production experience: incidents, debugging, API failures, data issues
- Experience owning a service end-to-end, from requirements to production support
- Clear product-level architectural thinking: well-designed APIs, correct data boundaries, proper error handling, ability to reason about trade-offs
- Understanding of microservice architectures and platform-level interactions
- Strong knowledge of HTTP APIs, SQL data modeling, and common failure modes
- Proficient daily use of AI coding tools (e.g. Claude Code), with the ability to review AI-generated code quickly and critically
- Readiness to build deep working knowledge of crypto and stablecoin payments: prior crypto experience is optional, and deep on-the-job learning of the domain is a mandatory part of the role
- Ability to work with ambiguity: ask the right questions and structure unclear problems, working independently without overly detailed technical specs
- High agency: you notice problems before they are assigned to you, raise risks early, and bring a proposed solution together with the problem
- Strong written and verbal communication in English
Preferred Experience
- Experience in fintech, crypto, payments, high-load or high-reliability systems
- Practical understanding of reliability patterns: retries, timeouts, idempotency, fallback strategies
- Experience with queues or messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS, BullMQ, etc.)
- Experience with Redis or other key-value stores
- Familiarity with Docker and Kubernetes (user-level understanding is enough)
- Basic understanding of AWS capabilities
- Experience with React (UI tasks, integrations, SDKs)
Reporting Structure
Reports to the Engineering Manager. No direct people management responsibilities.
Location
Remote. USA, Argentina, or Brazil. The role works US business hours (Eastern Time).
Compensation and Benefits
As an independent contractor, you'll enjoy the flexibility to determine how and when you deliver your work, while partnering closely with our team to meet agreed milestones and business objectives. Compensation and engagement terms will be outlined in your contractor agreement.
Additional Benefits
- Company issued laptop
- Technology Accessories
- Annual In-Person Full-Team Meetup

Build what comes next in AI-powered healthcare
Our client is a fast-scaling, AI-enabled healthcare technology company. You’ll join a 30-person engineering team that’s hiring hands-on software engineers from mid-level through senior.
If you have 3–4 years of strong production experience and are ready for more ownership, we want to meet you. If you’re a senior engineer who wants to stay close to the code and help shape what comes next, there’s room for that too. We’ll match the scope and compensation to the experience and engineering judgment you bring.
You’ll build software that supports real healthcare delivery, working on systems used by operations teams, clinicians, and health-plan partners. This is a chance to join a company scaling quickly, take on meaningful technical challenges, and grow alongside the business.
What you’ll work on
- Build applications, APIs, integrations, data workflows, and internal tools that make healthcare operations more effective
- Take features from understanding the problem through implementation, testing, release, and improvement
- Work with Ruby on Rails, Python, Node.js, and PostgreSQL in a database-intensive environment
- Improve performance, data quality, reliability, and visibility into how systems behave in production
- Collaborate with engineers, product partners, and business stakeholders to make practical tradeoffs and ship useful software
- Use AI coding tools thoughtfully, with strong review, testing, and accountability for the result
- At the senior level, lead larger technical initiatives, guide architecture decisions, and help raise engineering standards while remaining hands-on
What we’re looking for
- At least 3 years of professional software engineering experience, with opportunities for mid-level and senior engineers
- Production experience with Ruby on Rails or Python, plus the ability to learn and work across the stack
- Strong SQL and hands-on PostgreSQL experience
- Solid fundamentals in data structures, API design, testing, debugging, and system performance
- Experience delivering web applications or full-stack features, with an understanding of how the user interface, services, and database fit together
- Good habits around Git, code reviews, testing, deployment, and production support
- Clear communication, curiosity, and the ability to work through changing requirements
- Practical experience with AI-assisted development and the judgment to validate what it produces
You don’t need to know every technology we use. We care about what you’ve built, how you solve problems, and how quickly you can learn.
Helpful experience
- Healthcare, insurance, or other sensitive-data environments
- AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, or observability tools
- Data pipelines, event-driven systems, or reliable third-party integrations
- Node.js or C# in addition to your core backend language
Why join
- A fully remote opportunity on a growing, 30-person engineering team
- Real ownership and direct collaboration with product and engineering leadership
- A fast-moving company putting AI to work in healthcare
- Room to expand your responsibilities and influence as the company scales
- Bonus and equity, giving you the opportunity to participate in the company’s growth
- Health, dental, and vision insurance; 401(k); generous PTO
Compensation and leveling
The annual base salary range is $140,000–$200,000 USD, plus bonus and equity. Expected base salary bands are:
- Mid-level: $140,000–$165,000
- Experienced mid-level: $165,000–$190,000
- Senior-level: $190,000–$200,000
Your level and offer will reflect your demonstrated skills, relevant experience, and the scope you can own. Years of experience are a guide, not the sole deciding factor.
Location and schedule
This role is fully remote within the United States, with reliable overlap with Pacific Time. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship. No travel is required.
Interested? Apply and tell us about something you built, what you owned, and the impact it had.

Who we are
We are an exciting new startup, Product Genius, bringing the power of cutting-edge AI to small and medium-sized businesses so that they can compete online. You love checking stuff off a to-do list, but also appreciate being on a fast-moving team where our to-do list continues to evolve.
You love creating beautiful code and refactoring messy code, you get an intrinsic thrill from it. That said, you understand the need of a startup to sometimes deliver functionality to the end user with code that isn't super pretty, at least at first.

You have ideally 1+ years of work experience in software development
What you will do
Work and learn in our product development team, gaining mentorship from software engineers, machine learning engineers, and product leads to help develop our product for end-users.
Ask for help when you need it, make progress when you dont, and learn how to tell the difference.
Work in an agile environment, rapidly delivering shippable features into production.
Learn to understand and empathize with our customers who are awesome entrepreneurs growing small and medium sized businesses in their communities.
We provide comprehensive healthcare (including dental and vision), remote workspace cash benefit, 401k plan, and stock options.

We value a diverse team, and we have seen firsthand that as our team diversity has increased, so has the quality of our ideas, teamwork, and delivery.
