Staff Backend Engineer - Submission Processing
Kalepa
About Kalepa:
Insurance is a $7T global industry built on professional labor: underwriting, claims, pricing, operations, and distribution. Kalepa is building AI that can perform that work.
We create professional-grade AI systems for insurers: software that can read, reason, decide, and act inside real workflows and operate over long-time horizons. Kalepa begins by augmenting professionals with the tools to succeed at their jobs. That earns us the right to learn from real decisions, capture decision traces, and automate what can be automated successfully over time.
Our products are already in production with leading insurers, driving measurable outcomes and expanding across functions. The opportunity is far broader than any single workflow: to build the AI operating system for decision-making across insurance. For people who want to work on AI that matters, in a sector where correctness, trust, and real-world impact count, Kalepa is just getting started.
Kalepa is backed by leading investors such as IA Ventures and Inspired Capital, and our team brings experience from Facebook, Palantir, Google, Amazon, McKinsey, Mastercard, and Uber.
Our Values (This is important):
Many organizations have a dusty list of corporate values that no one ever follows. Kalepa is not one of those companies. Our values are designed to unlock the potential of our employees.
Success at Kalepa is bred from five core principles:
- Hustle and Determination - We hire people who take full ownership of their craft and relentlessly pursue excellence with speed and determination. We choose the hard problems and do not give up. This is the foundation of how we work and how we win.
- Deliver Customer Impact - We're obsessed with customer impact. Every feature, every line of code, every decision is measured against one question: does this help insurers make better decisions? If it doesn't drive speed, accuracy, or profitability for our customers, we don't build it.
- Meritocracy - We're building something exceptional, and that requires exceptional people and ideas. We have a high bar but we reward excellence with rapid growth. If you're the best at what you do, you'll thrive here.
- Transparency - We value honest, transparent communication over politics. We challenge ideas, not people. We say what needs to be said, even when it's hard. This is how we solve problems fast and find the truth.
- Experiment Relentlessly - Many of the problems we face have never been solved before. We tackle them by testing quickly, measuring rigorously, and iterating until we find the path forward. Speed of learning is our advantage.
In addition to our NY office, we have remote employees speaking 10+ languages across the globe. But we invest in bringing our people together both for regional meetups and global offsites (2021 - Playa Del Carmen | 2022 - Rome | 2023 - Buenos Aires | 2024 - Lisbon | 2025 - Cartagena).
Kalepa’s culture isn’t for everyone, and that’s ok. But for the people who are a fit, they can’t imagine working elsewhere.
About the role:
Salary range: $200k – $290k USD*
Location: Remote (USA)
We are looking for engineers who enjoy going deep on hard problems and owning end-to-end outcomes. As a Staff engineer on the Submission Processing team, you’ll work at the intersection of AI and backend engineering and have major ownership and agency: design the systems, make architectural calls under ambiguity, and play a key role in setting the technical direction for the team.
You’ll be working on building and scaling LLM-based systems that process billions of highly unstructured data points on a daily basis, extract precise information, and surface insights that insurers rely on for high-stakes decisions. This is a problem the industry hasn't solved effectively yet, and you'll be working on cutting-edge challenges that require creativity and ambition. We're a small team where individual contributions have an outsized impact on both our technology and our business.
You'll be right at home if you:
- Have 8+ years of software engineering experience.
- Embody hustle and grit, you're excellent at your craft and relentless in pursuing it.
- Take full ownership of your work and drive projects to completion with minimal oversight.
- Communicate proactively, surfacing blockers, asking the right questions, keeping stakeholders in the loop.
- Thrive on experimentation: you're comfortable testing ideas, measuring results, and iterating quickly on problems no one has solved before.
- Have strong fundamentals in system design, debugging, and problem-solving.
- Have worked with LLMs in production and understand what it takes to deploy them at scale.
- Have experience with AWS and serverless technologies (Lambda, EC2), asynchronous workflows, and cloud environments.
- Know Python (our main stack), though we’re open to strong candidates from other OO backgrounds
- Are comfortable with relational databases, ideally PostgreSQL.
- Are excited by problems others are struggling with.
- Bonus: experience with document pipelines and processing large amounts of data
What you’ll get:
- Competitive salary (based on experience level)*.
- Significant equity options package.
- Work with an ambitious, smart, global, and fun team to transform a $7T global industry.
- 20 days of PTO a year.
- Global team offsites.
- 100% covered PPO medical, 100% covered vision and dental for individuals and families.
- Healthy living/gym stipend. Mobile phone bill stipend.
- Continuing education credits.
- 401(k) plan with employer contribution (regardless of employee contribution)
*The salary range listed is an estimate and will vary based on a variety of factors. Final compensation will be determined during the offer stage based on relevant experience, performance during the interview process, and geographic location, and may therefore differ from the posted range.

Senior Software Engineer, Backend
Customer.io
Hi, I’m Paul, VP of Engineering at Customer.io. We’re looking for experienced backend engineers who care deeply about reliability, performance, and scalability. You’ll design, build, and evolve the systems that power communication at massive scale - while helping us push the boundaries of what great engineering can look like.
About Customer.io
Over 8,000 companies - from scrappy startups to global brands - use our platform to send billions of emails, push notifications, in-app messages, and SMS every day. Customer.io powers automated communication that people actually want to receive.
We help teams send smarter, more relevant messages using real-time behavioral data. Under the hood: Go, React, Ember and AI help us ship fast and scale with confidence.
What We Value
OwnershipYou own problems end to end. You move fast, act like an owner, and thrive in ambiguity. You've led complex projects before, whether officially or not, and you're ready to do it again.
Engineers with product taste
You think like a user, not just an engineer. You care how your systems power real customer value - and how to make them better.
A healthy skepticism for “the way things are done.”
You bring rigor and creativity. Best practices matter - but never more than forward motion.
What You’ll Do
- Design and build distributed systems in Go that help customers send timely, relevant messages at scale
- Collaborate across teams to debug issues and deliver reliable solutions
- Own problems end to end - from architecture and schema design to testing, deployment, and monitoring
- Share knowledge and raise the bar through sharing your progress publicly with short videos, thoughtful writing, and mentorship
- Use AI agents to make multi-file changes by scoping the work, writing the prompt, and verifying the output
What we're looking for
- 7+ years of experience building scalable, distributed systems in Go (or similar statically typed languages)
- Comfort working in cloud-native environments (AWS, GCP)
- Familiarity with relational databases (we use MySQL) and an understanding of performance tradeoffs
- Experience with observability tooling and operating production systems
- A bias for action over perfection, and pride in owning technical decisions
Compensation & Benefits
We believe in transparency. Starting salary for this role is $150,000 - $200,000 USD (or equivalent in local currency) depending on experience and subject to market rate adjustment.
We know our people are what make us great, and we’re committed to taking great care of them. Our inclusive benefits package supports your well-being and growth, including 100% coverage of medical, dental, vision, mental health, and supplemental insurance premiums for you and your family. We also offer 16 weeks paid parental leave, unlimited PTO, stipends for remote work and wellness, a professional development budget, and more.

Our Process
No gotchas, no trick questions - just a clear, human process designed to help both of us make an informed decision.
- Application - We review everyone with care. Tell us why you're interested.
- Recruiter Call (30 mins) - Let’s chat about what you’re looking for and how we work.
- Behavioral Interview (60 mins) - Talk with one of our hiring managers about your experience, values, and working style. We’ll explore topics like ownership, product thinking, and collaboration.
- Technical Interview (60 mins) - A collaborative system design conversation focused on scaling challenges.
- Take-Home Assignment - Complete a short, realistic task similar to what you’d work on here.
- Assignment Review Call (60 mins) - Walk us through your work and discuss tradeoffs, priorities, and how you’d iterate.
All final candidates will be asked to complete a background check and employment verifications as part of our pre-employment process.
Customer.io recognizes the stifling impact of systemic injustice on diverse communities. We commit to using our influence to increase inclusion and equity within the tech industry. We strive to build an inclusive team culture, implement bias-free hiring practices, and develop community partnerships to expand our global impact.
Zoom is the only video conference platform that we use, virtual interviews will be conducted using the video capability (i.e., not via the chat), and offers will be extended in writing on official Customer.io letterhead. Please be vigilant in all of your job search activity, and if you have any questions please contact .
Join us!
We believe in empathy, transparency, responsibility, and, yes, a little awkwardness. If you’re excited by what you read and want to build software that makes communication better for everyone—apply now.
