Description

Audacity is the world's most popular free, open-source audio editor — a 25+ year legacy product with a massive global user base, now going through its most ambitious transformation ever: from audio editor to a full DAW.

We're looking for a Product Owner to lead this transformation.

What is in it for you?

Own a product used by millions - Shape the future of the world's leading free music notation platform, used by composers, educators, and musicians globally.

Radical ownership and impact - Drive product strategy, roadmap, and community engagement.

Work at the intersection of music, open source, and AI - Help define the next generation of creative tools alongside one of the largest music communities in the world.

We are actively integrating AI automation into relevant areas of the business and expect candidates with mindset focused on improving efficiency and deliver a better user experience.

Key responsibilities

Key responsibilities

  • Define Audacity's product strategy and roadmap with measurable goals and quarterly milestones — including a credible, dated plan for the DAW transformation (audio engine migration, MIDI & MIDI 2.0, VSTi support, piano roll, mixer, AI-assisted workflows).
  • Own backlog and prioritization end-to-end — what gets built, deferred, or cut, with clear rationale and acceptance criteria.
  • Make the product decisions that unblock the team — flows, edge cases, defaults, quality bars — and steer designers and engineers as they execute.
  • Drive every release end-to-end — plan, scope, quality standards, community communications, launch metrics, post-release reports.
  • Own key metrics — DAU, installs, website traffic, ecosystem impact — with trusted tracking, weekly reviews, and data in every decision.
  • Grow Audacity's role in the Muse ecosystem — drive cross-product scenarios and attribution with MuseHub and Audio.com, turn Audacity's user base into active users of the wider ecosystem.
  • Own how Audacity engages with its open-source community and the product story, staying accountable for the narrative around every release.
  • Lead, develop, and grow the Audacity team — 8 people across engineering, design, and QA.

Requirements

  • Proven Product Owner or Product Manager track record for a complex software product with a large active user base.
  • Deep understanding of audio production and DAW workflows. You don't need to be a professional producer, but you should be fluent in how people actually make and edit audio.
  • Comfortable working closely with engineers on a multi-platform C++ desktop application — making informed trade-offs on performance, stability, and architecture.
  • People management experience — you've directly led and grown a multidisciplinary team.
  • End-to-end data ownership — instrumenting, tracking, setting targets, and actually moving them.
  • Comfort engaging with vocal external communities. You can own the narrative when decisions are unpopular.
  • Strong written and verbal communication in English.

Benefits

Creativity every day: Make inspiring products for musicians, artists and creators – no day is the same.

Impactful work Influence the future of the music industry and change the lives of millions worldwide.

Work set up: We’ll make sure you’re set up for success with the right work equipment, whether that’s company-provided hardware or an equipment allowance.

Growth and development: Receive specialized training, language lessons, conferences and learning materials.

Team well-being: Support for your mental health and wellbeing, including confidential help during life’s tougher moments.

Overview

Leads the design, development, testing, release, and support of complex Business Central and cross-platform mobile solutions. Serves as a technical leader by making sound design decisions, mentoring developers, resolving difficult technical problems, and improving engineering quality and delivery practices.

What This Position Owns

  • Visioning and Competitive Intelligence (20%): Shape domain direction using market signals, customer insight, and competitor analysis; propose strategic bets, positioning updates, and sequencing changes tied to business outcomes.
  • Backlog and Sprint Readiness (15%): Own backlog health by prioritizing and preparing work so items are sprint-ready with clear scope, acceptance criteria, dependencies, and delivery sequencing.
  • Stakeholder and Cross-Team Alignment (10%): Align Product, Engineering, Support, Sales, and Implementation on priorities, timing, tradeoffs, and customer commitments so execution and messaging remain consistent.
  • Customer Discovery and Validation (15%): Engage users and customers, including dispatchers, technicians, and service managers, to validate problems, test assumptions, and convert learning into better priorities and requirements.
  • Solutioning and Tradeoff Work (10%): Partner with Engineering to evaluate solution options and make practical decisions across customer value, effort, risk, scalability, and time to value.
  • Escalations and Issue Triage (10%): Lead or coordinate priority customer and product issue response, including triage, decision-making, stakeholder communication, and prevention actions that reduce recurrence.
  • Quality Validation and Platform Release Readiness (10%): Confirm product behavior through UAT support, regression validation, and release-impact checks; stay current on major platform releases and features to protect compatibility and identify product opportunities.
  • Documentation Review and Enablement Readiness (5%): Verify release documentation is accurate, complete, and usable across customer-facing guides, internal support notes, and enablement materials.
  • KPI Review and Outcome Tracking (5%): Monitor adoption and service-performance metrics, interpret outcome trends, and feed learning back into roadmap and backlog decisions.

How Success Is Measured

  • Success is measured by backlog health and sprint readiness; quality of product decisions and cross-team alignment; validated customer learning; timely resolution of priority issues; release quality and platform compatibility; documentation readiness; feature adoption; service-performance trends; and measurable movement in product and business outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain a fact-based product-domain perspective using customer feedback, support patterns, market signals, competitive research, platform changes, and performance data.
  • Propose product bets, positioning changes, and roadmap sequencing updates with a clear connection to customer and business outcomes.
  • Own and continuously prioritize the backlog based on customer value, strategic fit, revenue impact, risk, technical health, effort, and time to value.
  • Translate priorities into sprint-ready work with clear problem statements, scope, user stories, acceptance criteria, dependencies, and sequencing.
  • Lead backlog refinement and provide timely product decisions before and during development.
  • Plan and conduct discovery with relevant users and customers, document findings, test assumptions, and incorporate validated learning into requirements and priorities.
  • Partner with Engineering to evaluate solution options, understand technical constraints, and make explicit tradeoff decisions.
  • Align Support, Sales, Implementation, Product, and Engineering on priorities, timing, customer commitments, release impact, and messaging.
  • Lead or coordinate triage for priority product and customer issues, including decision-making, stakeholder updates, and prevention follow-up.
  • Support UAT, regression validation, and release-impact reviews to confirm that product behavior meets expectations.
  • Monitor major Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and related platform releases for compatibility risks and product opportunities.
  • Approve completed work against acceptance criteria and intended customer outcomes before release.
  • Review customer-facing documentation, internal support notes, release communications, and enablement materials for accuracy and readiness.
  • Monitor adoption and service KPIs, interpret trends, and use the findings to adjust roadmap, backlog, discovery, and enablement decisions.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience owning a B2B software product area or product backlog and translating strategy, market insight, and customer problems into clear priorities and development outcomes.
  • Strong capability in customer discovery, competitive analysis, requirements definition, backlog management, facilitation, stakeholder communication, issue triage, UAT, and data-informed decision-making.
  • Experience with SaaS, ERP, Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, and rental, service, field-service, or industrial-asset workflows is strongly preferred.
