About the Role

You'll build the agentic systems and data pipelines behind NetworkOS's AI capabilities: production agent workflows built on industry-leading agent SDKs and harnesses, MCP servers, and Agent Skills standards; the eval and observability layer that keeps LLM quality measurable; and the ingestion pipelines that turn messy, diverse data sources into queryable knowledge.

This is an execution seat, not an ivory tower. You'll commit code every week, ship agents as product capability rather than demos, and help shape a roadmap that's heading deep into graph + agents territory — for customers in defense, public sector, and regulated enterprise.

What You'll Do

• Ship production agent systems — design, build, and operate agentic workflows (agent SDKs, MCP servers, Agent Skills standards) powering AI-driven matching, analysis, and data intelligence

• Operationalize LLM quality — build the eval and observability layer with Langfuse, golden datasets, LLM-as-judge patterns, and FinOps-style tracking so every workflow has measurable quality, cost, and latency

• Engineer data pipelines — robust ingestion of documents, structured data, and external sources into searchable knowledge bases with quality validation, deduplication, and incremental updates

• Own retrieval quality — hybrid search combining vector, keyword, and metadata retrieval, continuously improved through reranking, query expansion, and contextual compression

• Accelerate with AI — build custom MCP tools and Agent Skills that make the whole engineering team measurably faster

What you’ll do

• Advise on payments products and infrastructure. You’ll support a broad portfolio of payments-related initiatives across Mercury. What you should have

• 4+ years of legal experience.

Currently, this role is focused on adoption – helping Java teams introduce Kotlin into existing applications. You’ll work directly with organizations to guide migration, integration, troubleshooting, and scaling, ensuring they move from initial experiments to successful production use.

In addition, you’ll proactively communicate with prospective users to help them understand the Kotlin adoption process, as well as design and implement the migration path. 

Responsibilities

• Track and maintain visibility into organizations and their stage of Kotlin adoption (e.g., not started, evaluating, experimenting, production)
• Proactively engage with organizations across different phases of their Kotlin adoption journey
• Develop and recommend high-level adoption strategies tailored to each organization’s context
• Identify and document blockers that hinder progress and propose ways to address them
• Establish and manage feedback loops with development teams to ensure continuous alignment and improvement

Technical expertise

• Extensive hands-on experience with Kotlin, Java, and the JVM ecosystem
• Proven experience migrating Java backend codebases to Kotlin
• Experience with the Spring (Boot) ecosystem or similar frameworks (e.g., Quarkus, Micronaut, Ktor)
• Solid understanding of build tools and project structuring, including Maven and Gradle

Communication and customer engagement

• Experience in customer-facing technical roles such as Solutions Engineering, Developer Advocacy, or Technical Consulting
• Strong English communication skills, both written and spoken
• Ability to lead workshops, demos, talks, meetups, and other public-facing activities
• Comfort with outbound engagement, including identifying target companies, articulating value propositions, and building relationships with engineering teams
• Ability to effectively communicate with engineers, tech leads, and business stakeholders

System design and architecture

• Ability to design and guide Kotlin adoption strategies for backend applications
• Experience designing backend systems using common architectural patterns (e.g., monolith, modulith, microservices)

LaunchDarkly is hiring a Backend Software Engineer to join our Flag Delivery team. Serving data to our customers is the core of our product and we’re expanding the team to add bandwidth and energy. The team is very senior, and this role is for someone eager to learn and grow as the team balances modernization with resilience and operational improvements.

In this role, you’ll build and improve backend services that sit directly on LaunchDarkly’s critical delivery path, partner closely with SDK, Platform, SRE, and Security, and work on real-time production systems at scale. This role is a strong fit for an engineer who is excited by distributed systems, weird production behavior, and learning quickly on a senior team, and who already brings real production instincts, strong debugging judgment, and clear AI fluency in their engineering work.

Responsibilities:

• Build, improve, and operate backend services that power LaunchDarkly’s Flag Delivery systems.
• Contribute to systems that support streaming and polling delivery models for LaunchDarkly SDKs.
• Debug production issues, improve service reliability, and help the team maintain strong standards around latency, availability, observability, and operability.
• Work with technologies and patterns common to modern distributed backend systems, including caching layers, network services, concurrency, failure handling, and cloud infrastructure.
• Collaborate closely with partner teams including SDK, Platform, SRE, Security, and Enterprise to deliver improvements across the broader platform.
• Participate in the on-call rotation and take ownership of the systems you help build.
• Learn the existing architecture deeply and make pragmatic improvements that increase system clarity, performance, and maintainability.
• Use AI as part of your engineering workflow with sound judgment, including knowing when to use it, how to direct it effectively, and how to verify or reject its output.
• Reason clearly about code, architecture, and whole-system behavior even when AI is in the loop.

• Clear, existing AI usage in engineering work.
• Ability to use AI without surrendering technical judgment.
• Familiarity with distributed systems fundamentals such as caching, concurrency, failure modes, and reliability.
• Experience debugging production issues and using observability to understand system behavior.
• Ability to reason clearly about code, architecture, and system behavior.
• Strong learning orientation and comfort working with senior engineers.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work well across engineering teams.
• Willingness to participate in on-call and production support.

• Multi-agent orchestration experience designing and operating systems where multiple AI agents collaborate, hand off work, and escalate to humans appropriately.
