Remote Senior RPG Programmer / Analyst

Support initiatives of company by providing programming support and analysis for software running on an IBM Power server utilizing the IBM i operating system. Programming support involves expertise in maintaining/developing applications including process and database design. While not an exhaustive list, expertise is required in the following programming languages / skill sets: RPG III, RPGLE, RPG Free, SQLRPGLE, CL, DDS, and SQL.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Interpret and define project needs as based on needs communicated from project sponsor.
- Provide recommendations to facilitate improvement and efficiency gains based on analysis of existing systems and programs.
- Ability to review complex issues for both cause and options for resolution.
- Must possess the ability to effectively communicate in oral and written fashion with both internal and external customers.
- Analyze, define, and document requirements for data manipulation, workflow, logical processes, hardware and operating system environment, interfaces with other systems, internal and external checks and controls, and outputs.
- Exhibit a high level of programming knowledge to achieve high level of results.
- Conduct adequate testing procedure to ensure quality programming output.
- Advise and work with departments to resolve issues and suggest programming alterations to enhance productivity.
- Train internal and external customers in the usage of new applications.
- Write and maintain documentation describing program development, logic, coding, testing, changes, and corrections.
- Monitor performance of programs after implementation.
- Cross-train personnel in design, setup, and usage of applications so that suitable backup is in place for support.
- Maintain good working relationships with departments, agencies, vendors, and customers.
- Provide 24X7 on-call support for Technology Department related issues.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum of ten years' experience with RPG programming in an IBM environment.
- Experience in the trucking industry preferred.
- Experience with SQL and EDI is favorable but not mandatory.
- Must possess excellent communication skills.
- Must be able to work in both a team and individual environment. Must be willing and able to take leadership role as well being able to fill a role of support.
- Ability to work required hours and travel if necessary.

Complete Description:
Our client's Vital Events and Screening Tracking System (VVESTS) is currently a PL/SQL Web Toolkit application running on the mod_plsql gateway. This technology is outdated. All VVESTS modules capture and process highly sensitive Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Protected Health Information (PHI), making web application security a top priority. The modernization effort requires the use of the latest web technologies, JavaScript/jQuery frameworks, templates, and CSS standards to address security vulnerabilities and ensure strict compliance with HIPAA regulations.
VVESTS is a mission-critical system that supports applications such as the Birth Registry, Death Registry (EDRS), and Screening Registry. The system integrates with multiple state agencies as well as several federal agencies and exchanges data with the state's Immunization Information System.
The project involves migrating all PL/SQL Web Toolkit modules and pages to Oracle Application Express (APEX), Oracle's low-code development platform for building secure, scalable enterprise applications.
The primary focus of this role will be supporting the data modernization of vital statistics and vital records systems.
