Bloom Engineering, a Wabtec Company improves the environmental sustainability of industrial heating applications, with a particular focus on the aluminum and steel industries. As a Drafting Intern, you will work closely with Bloom’s Design Engineering team and other professionals to support the development and documentation of custom industrial combustion equipment. You will gain hands-on experience applying drafting and CAD principles in an engineered-to-order manufacturing environment.
How will you make a difference?
In this role, you will help translate engineering concepts and designs into accurate drawings and documentation used to manufacture and assemble Bloom equipment. You will gain practical experience with real-world engineering projects while learning how drawings move from design through manufacturing and ultimately into equipment operating at customer facilities.
This internship is a temporary role that provides exposure to mechanical design, manufacturing processes, engineering standards, and the collaboration required to deliver custom-engineered products.
What do we want to know about you?
- Currently pursuing an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Mechanical Design, Drafting and Design Technology, or a related technical discipline.
- Coursework or experience using 2D and/or 3D CAD software.
- Basic understanding of mechanical drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and drafting principles.
- Ability to read and interpret technical information and engineering documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate work.
- Comfortable working in both an office and manufacturing environment.
- Willingness to ask questions, learn from experienced engineers and drafters, and incorporate feedback.
- Ability to organize work and manage multiple assignments and priorities.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with AutoCAD and/or Autodesk Inventor is preferred.
What will your typical day look like?
- Create and revise mechanical drawings under the direction of engineers and experienced drafters.
- Develop and update 2D drawings and 3D models for components, assemblies, and custom-engineered equipment.
- Incorporate engineering changes and redlines into existing drawings.
- Assist with preparing drawings and documentation for manufacturing and assembly.
- Apply Bloom drafting standards, drawing practices, and document-control requirements.
- Review drawings for accuracy, completeness, dimensions, and consistency before release.
- Assist with maintaining drawing files, bills of materials, and related engineering documentation.
- Work with engineers, drafters, manufacturing employees, and other team members to resolve drawing or design questions.
- Visit the manufacturing floor to see how drawings are translated into fabricated and assembled equipment and develop a practical understanding of manufacturability.
- Participate in design reviews and engineering discussions as appropriate.
- Support ongoing engineering projects and other drafting assignments based on business needs.
Design Intern
