About the role
The Systems Engineer is the systems engineering authority for the Autonomous Yard Truck program. The role owns the integrity of requirements, functional architecture, traceability, and technical change impact activities across product, autonomy, drive-by-wire, vehicle, safety, software, hardware, integration, and test teams. This engineer ensures product intent is translated into implementable and verifiable system behavior while helping mature the organization's systems engineering practices and AI-enabled tooling.
What you'll do
Requirements and Traceability
Own the capture, structure, review, quality, and maintenance of Product, System of Systems (SoS), and System requirements in Jama Connect. Maintain end-to-end traceability so System requirements trace to SoS requirements, SoS requirements trace to Product requirements, and every System requirement has a justified path to the Product need it supports. Ensure Product requirements link to validation scenarios and SoS/System requirements link to verification test cases; regularly resolve missing, incorrect, duplicate, or unjustified requirements and relationships. Functional Architecture and Safety Integration
Develop and maintain the Yard Truck SoS functional architecture and use it to derive, organize, map, and allocate requirements across autonomy, the Drive-by-Wire Kit, vehicle systems, operator interfaces, remote operations, and supporting systems. Ensure the architecture supports safety analyses, including Functional Hazard Analysis for autonomy and ISO 26262 Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment activities for the Drive-by-Wire Kit. Coordinate closely with the Yard Truck Safety team so hazards, safety goals, mitigations, safety concepts, and safety-derived requirements are reflected in the architecture, Jama baseline, and verification approach. Implementation Alignment and Change Impact Work with systems engineers and development subject-matter experts to allocate and trace System requirements to the software, hardware, controls, interfaces, and vehicle elements responsible for Number of headcount you want to hire? 2 1 implementation. Confirm that product features are fully decomposed into implementable system behavior and represented in development, integration, verification, and validation activities. Partner with development and test teams to identify requirement gaps, ambiguities, conflicts, and needed changes discovered during implementation and testing. Assess new features, feature changes, and defects against requirements and architecture, including impacts to safety, interfaces, allocations, verification cases, validation scenarios, and traceability; distinguish implementation defects from requirements defects, architecture gaps, interface issues, and legitimate feature changes. Systems Engineering Process and Tooling
Help define and mature the systems engineering processes applied to the Yard Truck program and represent program needs in broader organizational process, governance, and tooling discussions. Collaborate with other systems engineers to evaluate and integrate emerging AI-assisted requirements, architecture, traceability, review, and change-impact tools, while ensuring outputs remain subject to engineering review and configuration control. Make requirements and systems artifacts easier for non-systems-engineering personnel to understand and use through clear structures, terminology, visualizations, reports, dashboards, training, and practical workflows. Technical Leadership
Lead cross-functional reviews involving product, autonomy, software, hardware, controls, safety, test, vehicle integration, and operations; resolve requirement, architecture, interface, and ownership issues through influence and technical judgment. Mentor systems engineers and provide working-level guidance to stakeholders using Jama, architecture models, traceability information, and related engineering artifacts. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical discipline. Seven or more years of systems engineering experience supporting complex cyber-physical systems integrating software, hardware, sensing, controls, communications, and physical equipment. Demonstrated experience with requirements development, decomposition, allocation, configuration management, and bidirectional traceability across multiple levels of a system hierarchy. Experience developing or maintaining functional architectures and using them for interface management, implementation allocation, safety analysis, and verification planning. Experience coordinating across software, hardware, controls, safety, integration, product, and test organizations to resolve technical issues and assess engineering changes. Experience with Jama Connect, IBM DOORS, Polarion, or a comparable requirements platform, along with strong technical leadership, facilitation, writing, and stakeholder-management skills. Systems engineering experience in autonomous vehicles, advanced driver-assistance systems, robotics, automated industrial equipment, or intelligent transportation. Experience with autonomy functions such as perception, localization, behavior planning, vehicle control, teleoperation, remote operations, or Drive-by-Wire systems. Experience supporting Functional Hazard Analysis, ISO 26262 HARA, functional safety concepts, or safety-derived requirements. Experience with model-based systems engineering tools and/or the evaluation, deployment, or governance of AI-assisted engineering workflows.
US Salary Range
$150,000—$190,000

About the role
Forterra is seeking a C2 Software Integration Engineer to own the command-and-control workflow that connects our autonomy stack to the operators who use it in the field. This is a full-stack integration role that spans the layers of that workflow: the autonomy stack, the middleware that moves data between systems, and the operator control unit (OCU) that operators use to command and monitor vehicles. Your job is to make command and control work end to end — from a command defined on a vehicle, through the middleware and the network, to the action an operator takes at the OCU — and to keep it working in real-world deployments.
We are in the middle of transitioning from our legacy OCU to a next-generation replacement. You will help bring the new interface online while keeping the legacy one running for the programs that still depend on it, and help carry those workflows across as the fleet transitions.
You will not be a middleware engineer or a front-end engineer. You will be the integrator who ties those layers together: fielding, debugging, supporting, and owning the success of this full-stack C2 workflow for programs. You will directly support real-world missions across our fleet of ground vehicles operated by our national security customers around the world.
The ideal candidate picks up unfamiliar codebases quickly, is a self-starter who does not wait to be handed scope, and is eager to leave a visible impact on how our systems are commanded and controlled. You are comfortable being the person who follows a problem across multiple systems and the network between them until it is resolved.
What you'll do
Own command and control end to end. Take a command from its definition on the vehicle, through the middleware and the network, to its representation at the OCU — and be accountable for the whole path working. Define and evolve the contracts between systems. Add and extend the message contracts that describe vehicle state, tasks, and commands, and carry them through to every system that produces or consumes them. Own the bridge between autonomy and middleware. Extend the integration layer that translates between the autonomy stack and the middleware — publishing what the vehicle knows (telemetry, autonomy state, Number of headcount you want to hire? 1 1 route and convoy state, zones) and turning operator commands into vehicle behavior (waypoint driving, route planning, convoy, teleop) while reporting status back. Frame command and control through the interface. Partner on the operator-facing interface to expose new commands and vehicle behaviors to operators in a usable way. You do not need to arrive as a frontend expert, but you must be willing to learn how command and control is framed through user interfaces and to contribute across that boundary. Support the outgoing interface. Keep the legacy OCU working for the programs that still rely on it, and help migrate those workflows onto the new interface as the fleet transitions. Field, debug, and support. Deploy the C2 workflow onto customer-bound hardware, validate it under real conditions, and drive issues to root cause across the autonomy stack, the middleware, and the network — including debugging behavior over constrained and unreliable links. Close the loop from test to deploy. Analyze test and field results, identify failures across the stack, and collaborate with the autonomy, middleware, interface, and networking teams to resolve them. Connect program needs to execution. Translate program and end-user requirements into delivered C2 capabilities, and be the integration point of contact who makes the full workflow succeed for a program. Leverage agentic AI. Use agentic AI tooling as a first-class part of how you navigate large codebases, prototype, and ship. Travel. 10–50% depending on candidate preference and role placement. B.S. in computer science, engineering, robotics, or related field, or relevant experience / show of skill. Experience with publish/subscribe or message-oriented middleware. Comfortable with — or able to quickly pick up — message schema / interface-definition formats and code generation. Willingness to learn how command and control is framed through user interfaces, and to contribute across the full stack rather than staying in one layer. About the role
This is an in-office position. The teams you support are in the field — deployed at program sites, operating our systems and moving data. You are their remote lifeline: when data stops flowing, a field network won't come up, an operator station misbehaves, or a box needs debugging, you resolve it from the office so program staff and the field teams don't have to travel to fix it. You are the Level 2 escalation behind our Level 1 on-site support, and when the support queue is quiet you contribute to general software development. We have a strong preference for an in-person, in-office candidate, though remote may be considered for the right person. Depending on the program you'll also step into Level 1 on-site support — expect roughly 25-35% travel averaged across the year.
What you'll do
Own the health of our field data pipeline — monitor that data is being captured and uploaded from program sites, diagnose failures, and drive them to resolution remotely. Provide Level 2 remote support to Level 1 on-site staff and to program teams on the ground across several field-facing systems: field networking (setup, configuration, mesh/tactical networks), operator control stations, and message-transport systems that connect operators to deployed systems. Debug issues across the stack — Linux systems, networking, and our data and comms tooling — and either fix them directly or coordinate the right engineering owner. Read and write Python to inspect, patch, and improve support and automation scripts that keep field infrastructure running. Document recurring problems and fixes so on-site (Level 1) staff can self-serve, reducing the need for anyone to travel to a site to keep systems running. Travel to program sites to provide hands-on Level 1 support when a program needs it — roughly 25-35% of the time, averaged over the year. - Contribute to general software development when the support queue is light — tooling, automation, and features that improve the systems above. Act as a utility player: flex onto adjacent software and infrastructure tasks as team needs shift. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a technical field or equivalent hands-on experience. Solid networking fundamentals — able to configure IP addressing, DNS, DHCP, routing/switching, VLANs, and VPNs, and troubleshoot a network from the ground up. Bonus points if you understand how these are implemented and work under the hood. Comfortable with Linux and basic command-line debugging (logs, services, processes, connectivity). About the role
The Vehicle Controls team is looking for a Systems Architect to take ownership of systems architecture, requirements, and integration/test work on our vehicle platforms. This is a true cross-disciplinary systems engineering role: you'll need enough depth in mechanical, electrical, and software engineering to hold your own in a technical conversation with specialists in any of those areas, while spending most of your time on the vehicle — integrating commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) actuation and sensing systems, and designing custom solutions when nothing commercially available fits the need.

Systems Architecture & Requirements
Own high systems architecture for vehicle subsystems, defining how mechanical, electrical, and software components interact. Work with internal and external customers to understand requirements and tradeoffs for overall system design decisions. Collaborate with hardware and software leads to mature and develop detailed hardware and software architectures. Write, maintain, and trace system and subsystem requirements through integration and test. Author and maintain Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Interface description documents, and other systems engineering artifacts to support development and safety analysis. Systems Integration & Test Work with design and development teams to integrate custom and COTS actuation and sensing systems onto vehicle platforms, and design unique actuation or sensing solutions when no suitable existing options exists. Work hands-on with vehicles to bring hardware and software components from different teams together into a working system. Troubleshoot integration issues across mechanical, electrical, and software boundaries in both lab and vehicle environments. Develop and execute test plans and procedures to validate system and subsystem performance. Become an expert autonomous vehicle operator to gain an understanding of how the DBW system fits into overall system architecture and needs to perform. Engineering & Analysis Write scripts (e.g. Matlab, Octave, Python) to process, analyze, and visualize test and telemetry data to debug issues and verify/validate system performance. Generate systems engineering artifacts to support safety analysis (MIL-STD-882, ISO-26262), including FMEA, Fault Trees, functional architectures and allocations, etc. Interpret mechanical and electrical CAD models, Bills of Material, COTS Specifications and drawings in support of integration work and requirement analysis. Review software design and code to understand and validate system-level behavior and integration impact.
