POSITION OVERVIEW
Under the supervision of the Academy’s Master Electrician and in accordance with standard trade practices, performs skilled electrical tasks as an Electrician involving the installation, maintenance, alteration and repair of a variety of electrical systems, life safety systems, and equipment. Persons in this classification may, because of their license, work independently. Assignments are received orally, or in writing and may be accompanied by penciled sketches, diagrams and blueprints. This position is considered “Essential” during emergency weather events and other major evolutions on campus and may be required to assist the grounds and custodial staff. This is an hourly, union staff position.
DUTIES
Duties for the Maintenance Technician’s differ depending upon which trade(s) he or she is assigned. The following duties are generic by necessity and do not encompass all trades or all potential assignments. Work assignments may change as needed by the Academy. Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
ALL TRADES
• Regular attendance is required.
• Understanding and demonstrating the behavior that your safety and the safety of your coworkers is paramount and is the #1 priority.
• Inspects assigned areas; corrects or reports safety hazards;
• Performs work relevant to specific trade, such as: plumbing, heating and air conditioning (HVAC), electrical systems, oilers and oil burners, boiler maintenance throughout the Academy.
• Assists other trades with maintenance and preventative maintenance tasks as needed.
• Assists with developing trades procedures and protocols for safe operations and maintenance.
• Assists with design and coordination of major maintenance and capital construction projects.
• May assist with outside contractors and may secure permits for the Academy for relevant work.
• Operates and maintains a variety of hand tools, power tools, and uses equipment relevant to the assigned trade.
• Required to learn the safe handling of the tools, required to attend the proper training and use PPE as required.
• Monitors and troubleshoots assigned systems; processes and responds to work orders to ensure progress, safety, and/or compliance with operational policies and procedures.
• Services, repairs and maintains Academy equipment/appliances etc. as needed; performs ongoing maintenance checks to determine need and ensure operational safety.
• Maintains a variety of operational records, logs, and reports.
• Recommends requisition of materials and supplies and maintains inventory.
• Assists in the clean-up of jobs, spaces, tools and equipment.
• Performs manual labor associated with the trade.
• Follows supervisor’s instructions and meets specified deadlines.
• Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the facilities department’s service to its customers by participating as an active and cooperative member of a team.
• Must maintain current active license(s).
• Communicates with other staff to schedule and plan projects.

ELECTRICAL
• Performs skilled electrical work, electrical system inspection, repair and maintenance, includes live work for transformers, connections, and energizing.
• Assists in the installation of new service or renovation of existing service, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic lighting, data communication, security, control, street lighting and related systems; performs installation and repair of motors, generators, transformers, conduit, air handlers, climate control equipment and interior wiring components.
• Assists with the installation of cable, conduit, outlets, fixtures, switches, controls, circuit, boxes and other construction related electrical tasks.
• Performs, records and tracks the progress of electrical maintenance and performs labeling of panels and features.
• Work is often non-routine in nature due to calls for service, and variety of assigned projects.
PLUMBING
• Includes all work performed at the Maintenance Technician I level and with installing, maintaining and repairing steam and hot water boilers, heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment, as well as preventive maintenance. Performs general plumbing work and assists with other mechanical systems as needed.
• Troubleshoots and repairs a wide range of malfunctions, leaks, failures and breakages.
• Installs, repairs and replaces pumps, valves, fans, and related equipment.
• Performs or assists with plumbing work on steam lines associated with heating systems.
• Assists in operating, servicing, cleaning, and repairing steam and hot water boilers.
• Installs, maintains, remodels and troubleshoots malfunctions of, and repair general plumbing lines, pipefitting systems, fixtures and equipment.
SKILLS
• Safely using and maintaining hand and power tools related to the work, skilled in identification and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for tasks.
• Performs general maintenance work, individually or as a member of a crew, in various areas.
• Understand and follow oral and written directions.
• Troubleshooting: Must be able to find the root cause of issues and think logically about solutions.
• Customer Service: Often works for many different customers, and must be friendly when working on site.

QUALIFICATIONS
All Trades
• High School diploma/GED.
• Valid Maine driver's license required.
• Knowledgeable in the basic principles, equipment, methods and materials used in building trades.
• Proven knowledge of the safe operation and maintenance of a variety of hand, power and shop tools used in a variety of trade areas.
• Shop mathematics preferred.
• Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms, ability to use e-mail.
• Must be self-motivated and hardworking.
• Must be able to get along well with others.
Additional Qualifications (Electrician)
• Minimum Required: Valid State of Maine Journeyman Electrician’s license or higher.
• Previous demonstrable experience as a licensed electrician required (4-6 years preferred).
• Knowledge of the standard methods and practices of the electrical trade, and knowledge of hand and power tools, materials, and equipment used in the electrical trade.
• Knowledge of the methods, theories and principles of electricity and electrical systems and of federal, state and local electrical codes and ordinances, as well as the occupational hazards intrinsic to the electrical trade, including knowledge of precautions and safeguards required and safe work practices are essential in performing the duties of the position.
• Ability to understand and explain technical sketches, diagram and blueprints, to detect and overcome defects and malfunctions in electrical systems, equipment and appliances, to plan and lay out electrical work for others.
• Skills in the proper use of electrical test equipment are required.
Additional Qualifications (Plumber)
• Minimum Required: Valid State of Maine Journeyman Plumber’s license or higher.
• Additional Boiler Operator’s License preferred. (Must obtain within 6 months of hire).
• Previous demonstrable experience as a licensed plumber required (4-6 years preferred).
• Knowledge of the standard methods and practices of the plumbing trade, and knowledge of hand and power tools, materials, and equipment used in the plumbing trade.
• Knowledge of the methods, theories and principles of plumbing/heating systems and of federal, state and local codes and ordinances, as well as the occupational hazards intrinsic to the trade, including knowledge of precautions and safeguards required and safe work practices are essential in performing the duties of the position.

POSITION OVERVIEW
This document describes the duties and expectations of adjunct faculty members at the Academy.
Adjunct faculty are non-permanent, temporary faculty who are hired on a semester-by-semester basis.
Part-time positions begin in late August 2024 except where otherwise noted. Please see below for a description of the various courses and credit hours currently open. Please note which course(s) applying for when submitting the application, CV, and cover letter. Compensation begins at $1000/unit. Units listed are per course section.
TEACHING
Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom, laboratory, or training ship(s) and in
immediate preparation for these; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught;
preparing contemporary teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies and practica; reviewing written examinations and papers; evaluating presentations; supervising independent study projects, supervising or teaching clinical cooperatives or industry programs, and assigning grades according to existing Academy policy.
OTHER ASPECTS OF FACULTY PERFORMANCE
Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general atmosphere of the academy. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public.
DUTIES
• Teach at undergraduate level in areas allocated by the Department Head and reviewed from time to time by the Department Head.
• Contribute to the development, planning and implementation of a high-quality curriculum.
• Assist in the development of learning materials, by preparing syllabus and lesson plans and
maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement, and attendance.
• Participate in the development, administration and marking of exams and other assessments.
• Provide advice and support to students.
• Inform students of their progress by promptly returning assignments, quizzes, papers, and exams.
• Hours vary but must hold 2-3 office hours weekly for an adjunct teaching 12 credit hours per week, or pro-rated portion thereof for fewer credit hours.

COURSES/POSITIONS AVAILABLE.
CH101 - Chemical Principles Lab (1.5 units per section)–3-hour first year chemistry laboratory class.
Experience and at least a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field required. Four sections are anticipated. Typical class size 16.
CH 101 Lab Preparation (3 units)—Position responsible for preparing introductory chemistry
laboratories. The schedule is flexible but requires undergraduate labs to be ready on Tuesday morning at 8am. The incumbent must be able to work independently and safely in the chemistry lab and be able to communicate effectively with the course instructors. Experience required. A master’s degree in chemistry or related field is desired. Three units.
CS 150 – Structured Problem Solving with Computers (3 units per section)—This course uses Excel to teach the basics of logical thinking and problem solving. Advanced degree in related field or relevant experience desired. One section needed.
FY 100 - First-Year Experience (1 unit per section)—This course seeks to improve student success by creating a structured and comprehensive college transition program for independent (non-regimented) students. The course will also introduce students to basic wellness concepts including physical fitness, nutrition, and stress management. Students will receive information about the many resources available to support them throughout their college career. Six sections anticipated. Typical class size 20.
FY 100 - Coordinator First-Year Experience (3 units)—This course seeks to improve student success by creating a structured and comprehensive college transition program for independent students (see description of FY100). Coordinator will help design curriculum, recruit, and schedule speakers, and coordinate the outcomes-assessment cycle. One part-time position, fall semester only.
HC 111 – Composition (4 units per section)—This course helps students develop a flexible writing
process that can be adapted to a variety of situations. Critical thinking and argumentation are
emphasized, and students practice basic research skills as they learn to write effectively in a professional voice. This course supports the marine license program requirements to meet the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW). The course may have embedded assessment requirements that must be completed in addition to the class requirements. Writing-intensive course. Multiple sections needed. Typical class size 20.
HC 160 - Spanish Level I (3 units per section)–Introductory level, includes the basics of the language with equal emphasis on developing reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills. For students with no previous study of the language or fewer than 2 years in high school. Two sections anticipated. Typical class size 25.
HC 230 - Humanities II (4 units per section)—An interdisciplinary examination of the cultural roots of modern global society from the middle Renaissance to modern times. Writing intensive course. Up to three sections anticipated. Typical class size 20.
MS101 - Pre-Calculus Mathematics (4 units per section) Includes linear and quadratic equations,
inequalities, simultaneous linear equations, matrices, graphs, composite and inverse functions,
logarithmic and exponential functions, complex numbers and the complex plane, basic trigonometry, and trigonometric identities and equations. One section anticipated, up to two possible. Typical class size 25.
MS102 - Pre-Calculus, Part I (4 units per section)—Part 1 of a 2-part pre-calculus sequence. Includes linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, complex numbers, basic trigonometry. Two sections anticipated. Typical class size 16.
PE114 - Ocean Survival (0.5 units per section)—A cold water safety and survival course to familiarize students with the planning and steps necessary to work, recreate, and supervise safety on or around cold water. This course supports the marine license program requirements to meet the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW). The course may have embedded assessment requirements that must be completed in addition to the class requirements. Thirteen sections anticipated. Typical class size 20.

POSITION OVERVIEW
This document describes the duties and expectations of adjunct faculty members at the Academy.
Adjunct faculty are non-permanent, temporary faculty who are hired on a semester-by-semester basis.
Part-time positions begin in late August 2024 except where otherwise noted. Please see below for a description of the various courses and credit hours currently open. Please note which course(s) applying for when submitting the application, CV, and cover letter. Compensation begins at $1000/unit. Units listed are per course section.
TEACHING
Teaching responsibilities include time spent in the classroom, laboratory, or training ship(s) and in
immediate preparation for these; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught;
preparing contemporary teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies and practica; reviewing written examinations and papers; evaluating presentations; supervising independent study projects, supervising or teaching clinical cooperatives or industry programs, and assigning grades according to existing Academy policy.
OTHER ASPECTS OF FACULTY PERFORMANCE
Collegiality, as well as professional and ethical conduct, enhances teaching, learning and the general atmosphere of the academy. Therefore, all faculty members are expected to serve in a collegial fashion and in accordance with professional and ethical principles when dealing with other faculty members, students, administrators, and members of the public.
DUTIES
• Teach at undergraduate level in areas allocated by the Department Head and reviewed from time to time by the Department Head.
• Contribute to the development, planning and implementation of a high-quality curriculum.
• Assist in the development of learning materials, by preparing syllabus and lesson plans and
maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement, and attendance.
• Participate in the development, administration and marking of exams and other assessments.
• Provide advice and support to students.
• Inform students of their progress by promptly returning assignments, quizzes, papers, and exams.
• Hours vary but must hold 2-3 office hours weekly for an adjunct teaching 12 credit hours per week, or pro-rated portion thereof for fewer credit hours.
• Maintain an awareness and enforce fire and health and safety regulations applicable to the teaching location.

COURSES/POSITIONS AVAILABLE.
CH101 - Chemical Principles Lab (1.5 units per section)–3-hour first year chemistry laboratory class.
Experience and at least a bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field required. Four sections are anticipated. Typical class size 16.
CH 101 Lab Preparation (3 units)—Position responsible for preparing introductory chemistry
laboratories. The schedule is flexible but requires undergraduate labs to be ready on Tuesday morning at 8am. The incumbent must be able to work independently and safely in the chemistry lab and be able to communicate effectively with the course instructors. Experience required. A master’s degree in chemistry or related field is desired. Three units.
CS 150 – Structured Problem Solving with Computers (3 units per section)—This course uses Excel to teach the basics of logical thinking and problem solving. Advanced degree in related field or relevant experience desired. One section needed.
FY 100 - First-Year Experience (1 unit per section)—This course seeks to improve student success by creating a structured and comprehensive college transition program for independent (non-regimented) students. The course will also introduce students to basic wellness concepts including physical fitness, nutrition, and stress management. Students will receive information about the many resources available to support them throughout their college career. Six sections anticipated. Typical class size 20.
FY 100 - Coordinator First-Year Experience (3 units)—This course seeks to improve student success by creating a structured and comprehensive college transition program for independent students (see description of FY100). Coordinator will help design curriculum, recruit, and schedule speakers, and coordinate the outcomes-assessment cycle. One part-time position, fall semester only.
HC 111 – Composition (4 units per section)—This course helps students develop a flexible writing
process that can be adapted to a variety of situations. Critical thinking and argumentation are
emphasized, and students practice basic research skills as they learn to write effectively in a professional voice. This course supports the marine license program requirements to meet the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW). The course may have embedded assessment requirements that must be completed in addition to the class requirements. Writing-intensive course. Multiple sections needed. Typical class size 20.
HC 160 - Spanish Level I (3 units per section)–Introductory level, includes the basics of the language with equal emphasis on developing reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills. For students with no previous study of the language or fewer than 2 years in high school. Two sections anticipated. Typical class size 25.
HC 230 - Humanities II (4 units per section)—An interdisciplinary examination of the cultural roots of modern global society from the middle Renaissance to modern times. Writing intensive course. Up to three sections anticipated. Typical class size 20.
MS101 - Pre-Calculus Mathematics (4 units per section) Includes linear and quadratic equations,
inequalities, simultaneous linear equations, matrices, graphs, composite and inverse functions,
logarithmic and exponential functions, complex numbers and the complex plane, basic trigonometry, and trigonometric identities and equations. One section anticipated, up to two possible. Typical class size 25.
MS102 - Pre-Calculus, Part I (4 units per section)—Part 1 of a 2-part pre-calculus sequence. Includes linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, complex numbers, basic trigonometry. Two sections anticipated. Typical class size 16.
PE114 - Ocean Survival (0.5 units per section)—A cold water safety and survival course to familiarize students with the planning and steps necessary to work, recreate, and supervise safety on or around cold water. This course supports the marine license program requirements to meet the Standards for Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW). The course may have embedded assessment requirements that must be completed in addition to the class requirements. Thirteen sections anticipated. Typical class size 20.
PS102 or PS201 (1 unit per section) – Technical Physics Laboratory. The 2-hour labs focus on mechanics (PS102) or on electricity and magnetism (PS201). Bachelor’s degree and experience in physical science essential. Typical class sizer 16.
