Position Objective

The Clinical Supervisor directly supervises staff and is a clinical expert practitioner specific to the unit at education/staff development functions as well as designated management functions to promote high quality, cost effective health care.

This position has authority to perform supervisory duties including but not limited to hiring, evaluating performance, issuing final disciplinary actions under the review of Human Resources, and recommending discharge in collaboration with members of management and Human Resources  

Essential Functions

1.       1. Clinical Decision Making/Judgment

·       Demonstrates expert clinical knowledge and skill in the specialization of the unit or initiative.

·       Provides for the coordination of patient care throughout the continuum for areas of responsibility.

·       Serves as an expert clinician, acting as a clinical resource for the staff.

·       Works collaboratively with other disciplines in problem analysis and resolution for pathways, protocols

·       And patient care delivery.

·       Expertly organizes and reprioritizes patient care activities based on subtle and overt and/or environmental changes.

·       Assists others in prioritizing patient care.

2.       2. Nurse-Patient Family Relationships

·       Expertly provides direct patient care to patients and families in a culturally, developmentally and ethically appropriate manner.

·       Demonstrates expert skill in managing and planning care for complex patient/family scenarios including physical, psychosocial, spiritual and learning needs of the patient/family.

3.       3. Clinical Scholarship

·       Effectively performs and improves all processes in order to achieve excellence with regard to AAMC’s quality standards and benchmarks.

·       As part of unit leadership, collaborates in developing, monitoring and changing practice as a result of performance improvement initiatives.

·       As part of unit leadership, collaborates to provide direction for staff development activities and orientation programs and staff meetings

·       Member of a professional organization specific to unit/initiative.

·       Maintains certification in specialty.

·       Supports Evidence Based Practice in clinical specialty to guide nursing practice, development of plans of care and interventions.

4.       4. Clinical Leadership

·       Demonstrates the ability to enhance skills and performance of others in order to achieve professional and organizational goals.  The competency is demonstrated by systematically providing clear objectives, performance-specific feedback, effective coaching and developmentally experience/opportunities.

·       Demonstrates the ability to optimize utilization of staff, matching staff talents and proficiencies to organizational needs in making, evaluating and reorganizing patient care assignments.

·       As part of unit leadership, manages daily operational throughout process in collaboration wth other unit leaders, Administrative Coordinator, Care Management, other nursing unit and support services to include room assignments, rounds/huddles, transfers/discharges.  Bed Board, full capacity protocol initiation, and effective communication with other disciplines and departments.

·       As part of unit leadership is responsible for review and implementation of the Joint Commission standards in collaboration with other unit leaders, including participation in Tracers.

·       Fosters interdisciplinary collaboration by chairing or serving as a representative for nursing on hospital-wide and service line committees and/or councils.

·       As part of unit leadership, participates in goals setting and prioritization.

·       As Unit Supervisor, is responsible for human resource management including but not limited to staffing and scheduling, performance evaluation, disciplinary action, orientation/development, and staff selection.

·       Educates and precepts new staff.

·       Demonstrates competency in computer documentation when completing patient records and serves as a resource.

·       Participates in fiscal management of unit to include ParEX oversight, managing repair requests and follow up for broken equipment, evaluation of new equipment and daily management of schedule to insure appropriate staffing levels for volume and acuity.

Knowledge/Experience:

Required Minimum Education: BSN

Preferred: MSN

Required Minimum Experience: 3 years as an RN in specialty related field

Required License / Certification:

• Maryland RN license
• BLS
• Where applicable, specialty certifications are required by entity and must be obtained within 12 months of hire.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Medium

Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Position Objective

Under the supervision of the Registered Nurse and Surgeon, participates as a member of the multidisciplinary surgical team to assist with operating room set-up, intraoperative patient care including retractor holding, camera holding, and room turn-over to enable efficient use of operating room scheduling time in accordance with the Standards of Care at AAMC.

Essential Functions

Provides patient care during the intra-operative phase of the surgery using physician preference cards and organizing and prioritizing care activities based on the patient and/or environmental changes.

Performs the following surgical skills: Opening surgical supplies, gowning and gloving all members of the surgical team, assisting the Circulator in prepping the patient, basic positioning of the patient, retractor holding, camera holding, decontamination/pre-cleaning of instruments used during case, between case cleaning, terminal cleaning of the ORs and surgical suite, performs operating room tasks as directed.

Will assist Surgical Team with room turn-over to maintain targeted room turnover between surgical cases in assigned room.

Prepares operating rooms for use: damp mops and dusts all horizontal surfaces before the first case of the day, anticipates and provides needed equipment for surgical cases, i.e. positioning devices, light sources, towers, tanks, fluids, etc.

Maintains aseptic technique during the surgical procedure, is able to identify breaks in aseptic technique, and is able to demonstrate corrective actions if aseptic technique is compromised

Knowledge/Experience

Required Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Required Minimum Experience: N/A

Preferred: One year previous experience as a surgical patient care technician.

Required License / Certifications: CPR - American Heart Association Healthcare Provider

Monitors and operates an array of extracorporeal equipment during surgery at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

8. Maintains perfusion quality control data and reports monthly to CV Leadership.
9. Requires analytical ability to organize/assess critical extracorporeal equipment needs and analysis of the data.
10. Operates within all regulatory guidelines and supports research initiatives.

Educational/Experience Requirements:

• Graduation from a CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Educational Programs) Perfusion program
• B.S. degree in related healthcare field
• 3-5years of experience.

RequiredLicense/Certifications:

• Licensure/Certification/Registration: Certification by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP) or ABCP eligibility.
• Licensure/Certification/Registration:  Licensure as “Perfusion Advanced” (currently a CCP) by the Maryland Board of Physicians
• Licensure/Certification/Registration:  “Perfusion Basic” (not a CCP) - Graduate of a CAAHEP Perfusion program but have not completed the requirements to take the ABCP exam.  Tenure contingent on obtaining licensure as Perfusion Advanced within 2 years of Perfusion Basic title
• CPR certification (must have American Heart Association - Health Care Provider)

Position Objective:

The Registered Nurse in surgery provides expert, professional nursing care to patients during the perioperative course. The RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates the care of patients throughout surgical intervention. The RN in surgery will supervise Operating Room Technicians and ancillary personnel. The primary responsibility of the RN will be to perform the duties of a circulator in the Operating Room. The RN may also be competent in the role of a scrub nurse and perform the duties of that role, as staffing requires.

• Assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care throughout the surgical experience.

• Applying the nursing process effectively with attention to patient safety, sterile technique, and evidence-based standards.

•        Graduate of an accredited school of nursing BSN

•        Adherence to the credentialing requirements of Luminis Health as stated in the nursing bylaws.

•        Minimum 2 years of operating room experience

Required License/Certifications:

• Organizes and reprioritizes patient care activities based on subtle and overt and/or environmental changes.
• Consistently and thoroughly assesses patients to collect data and identify learning needs according to established standards and policies.
• Utilizes a systematic, continuous and complete analysis of assessment data to develop individualized problem lists for assigned patients.
• Develops and individualizes a plan of care for each patient in accordance with established standards, appropriate prioritization of problems/needs, and mutually agreed upon goals.
